PRESS RELEASE: DON’T LET CHRISTCHURCH BE A SAFE SEAT

PRESS RELEASE 15/11/2019

DON’T LET CHRISTCHURCH BE A SAFE SEAT - VOTE #NOPETOCHOPE

Christchurch Chairs Against Chope is campaigning for change in Christchurch. Traditionally a safe Conservative seat, many people feel poorly represented by the local MP Christopher Chope and won’t stand for it any longer. In the run up to the General Election on the 12th December 2019, Christchurch Chairs Against Chope will place chairs emblazoned with messages about Chope’s voting record - which many people find objectional - around the constituency.
‘We don’t think Chope should be sitting pretty come the 12th December,’ says Lorna Rees, Chair of Christchurch Chairs Against Chope. ‘Many people, even those who have voted for and campaigned for the Conservative party all their lives find it impossible to support him. A member of his own party has said: “it appears he's trying to block bills to protect women which is not a popular thing. He’s an old dinosaur”!’
Christchurch Chairs Against Chope don’t think people should take poor representation sitting down. They have created 28 chairs, one for each day of the campaign, from when the candidate list is announced on the 14th November. The message is clear: if you object to upskirting and FGM, unseat Chope. If you're worried about paying every time to see your GP, unseat Chope. If you're concerned about climate change, unseat Chope. If you believe in equal marriage, unseat Chope.
We hope the chairs make people smile,’ says Lorna, ‘and encourage people to vote chairfully.’
Christopher Chope has had one of the largest Conservative majorities in the country since 1997. Christchurch Chairs Against Chope think it's bad for democracy when someone has a safe seat. The people of Christchurch have the power to vote differently. Vote #NopeToChope

NOTES TO EDITORS:
Members of the public are encouraged to take photos of the chairs and share them to their social media accounts with the hashtags #NOPETOCHOPE #SAFESEATCAMPAIGN #GE2019
